How this year has zoomed by...only today did I realise that 'It's that time of year again'.
I'm a practiced hustler (you have to hustle in the creative world of Art and work, as a freelancer - you have to get your own gigs, no one's gonna do it for you)
Even during the two years when I worked in the field of theatre (Design), I had to hustle. Not just hustle with my creative ideas...I hustled for venues and freebies.
One of my 'jobs' (as well as Costume and Set Designer/Maker) was to go out blagging in town to get donations, useful stuff, costume loans, paint, materials and all manner of things. We got a lot of stuff to help us with our productions. Any businesses who donated to us, got a free advert in the widely distributed programme. Worked well.
Today I went on the hustle with my co-hustler to get more gorgeous and generous prizes for the carnival/Barn Dance/Fete raffle on 6th July. Being personable and smiley helps : )
It helps if you know the business, from whom you are blagging for prizes, not necessary...just easier. I know (from being a local resident with a shopping habit ; ) a few of the local businesses and they always turn up and give generously. So thank you, to them, once again.
I went out with the mental attitude: 'People, 'NO', is not an option'. It was not. No refusals.
So, we are high-fiving the new lot of prizes. The money raised from purchase of raffle tickets goes directly to Kenya. More precisely, the Molo Charity in Kenya. This charity raises money through marathon-raised sponsorship, the local DBC greengrocer and the annual Fete.
The funds are sent directly, nothing is taken for admin, or tax etc. Funds raised so far have enabled sanitation, medicine, building and generally improving the lives of others in the small village of Molo. That is very cool.
