Fame

Updated: Nov 3, 2019

What is it?

I seem to be on a course of 'F' words : )

It comes from the Anglo/French word 'fama'

Origin of fame: 1175–1225; Middle English, Anglo-French, Old French

Latin fāma talk, public opinion, repute, akin to fārī to speak.

Well, this was the original meaning - relating to communication.

Now. How do we perceive 'fame'?

'Public Eye', recognition through media, film, and industries or notoriety, which can have either good or bad connotation.

I saw a very funny pinterest post, a while back and it said, scrawled on an A-board in a street

"STOP making stupid people famous"

I laughed out loud because, remember what the 'famous' pop artist Andy Warhol was reputed to have said?

"In the future everyone will have their fifteen minutes of fame"

Reality TV. Yes. Quite. Take a bunch of 'stupid people' and hurl them into the public eye, talk about them, photograph them, put them in panel games, quote and misquote them. Distort them beyond all recognition.

Then, watch them fall from grace because they haven't got a clue what just 'happened' in their life.

What has happened is that we have created a narcissistic culture where everyone thinks that they are almost 'entitled' to fame. Andy Warhol was right in his prediction.

The irony is this. Real 'fame' is not about celebrity-ism. Real fame is for those who stand out, not fit in, real fame is not for followers, for imitators. Real fame is fameless, not caring about any 15 minutes, 15 years, 150 years. Real fame has no notion or desire of being 'famous'.
